Samsung's first 12-nanometer DDR5 DRAM will be mass-produced in 2023

Release Date:

2022-12-22

On December 21, Samsung Electronics announced that it has successfully developed the first 16Gb DDR5 DRAM built using a 12-nanometer process technology. At present, Samsung Electronics has completed a compatibility product evaluation with AMD for this new product.

According to Samsung, the new DRAM will be the foundation for more sustainable operations in areas such as next-generation computing, data centers, and AI-driven systems. AMD said that the renewed cooperation between AMD and Samsung Electronics mainly focuses on DDR5 memory products optimized and verified on the Zen platform.

Samsung Electronics' technological breakthrough in 12-nanometer DDR5 DRAM was achieved by using a new high-dielectric (high-k) material to increase battery capacitance, as well as patented design technology to improve key circuit characteristics. Combined with advanced multi-layer extreme ultraviolet lithography technology, the new DRAM has Samsung's highest DDR5 Die density, enabling a 20 percent increase in wafer productivity.

In terms of transmission speed, Samsung's 12nm-class DRAM is based on the latest DDR5 standard and has a transmission speed of 7.2 gigabits per second (Gbps), which can process two 30GB ultra HD movies in one second.

In terms of power consumption, the power consumption of 12nm-class DRAM is reduced by about 23% compared to the previous generation of Samsung DRAM products. Samsung Electronics revealed that the new DRAM will be mass-produced in 2023, and the company also plans to expand the new DRAM products to a wider range of market segments.

More DDR5 memory will be mass-produced in 2023

Thanks to the upgrading of server cpus in data centers, the demand for DDR5 memory in server terminals continues to increase. In recent years, chip manufacturers have also continued to update the mass production progress of their DDR5 products.

For example, in October 2021, Intel released a 12-generation core Alder Lake desktop processor supporting DDR5 memory; At present, Samsung Electronics and AMD are developing a single capacity of 512GB/1TB DDR5 memory, this 16GB DDR5 is Samsung Electronics' first DDR5 product; SK Hynix is the world's first manufacturer to officially release DDR5 products, the company said in the second quarter of 2022 earnings report that it will begin mass production of DDR5 memory particles in the next few months, in addition to plans to start early 2023, the introduction of 1α nanoscale process into DDR5 DRAM.

According to the plans of major manufacturers, we will see more mass-produced DDR5 memory products on the market in 2023.
