Micron confirms suspension of supply to Huawei

Release Date:

2019-05-30

According to China Times, Micron Technology, a major memory chip manufacturer, officially issued a statement on May 29 to suspend supplies to Huawei.

As an American company with global operations, Micron respects and complies with all laws and regulations of the United States and the countries in which it operates, and has suspended its supply to Huawei in order to comply with the relevant regulations of the United States government.

After joining the ranks of suspending supplies to Huawei, Micron has sent a letter asking major module manufacturers to cooperate and not supply related storage products such as modules, memory cards or solid state drives made from Micron memory directly or indirectly to Huawei and its affiliates. This is despite the fact that the US Department of Commerce issued a temporary license to Micron on May 20 to ensure that Huawei products containing Micron parts sold in the market before May 16 are not affected. This temporary license from the US Department of Commerce can only ensure the shipment of Huawei products until 16 days (including 16 days).

Given that 13 percent of Micron's revenue came from Huawei as of the first half of fiscal 2019, Micron is evaluating options to mitigate the expected impact on the company's business.

Industry analysts said that after Micron temporarily supplied Huawei, it may trigger market selling pressure, although Micron stressed that it will adjust its strategy to reduce the impact, but also increase the market's expectation of a continued decline in prices.

As Huawei's Ren Zhengfei said in a previous interview, 'the suspension of supply has little impact on Huawei, because we have been prepared', Huawei quickly took measures to respond, and last week has turned to other channels to start 'sweeping'.

It is understood that Huawei has purchased DRAM from South Korea's Samsung and NAND Flash from Japan's Toshiba to meet its own memory supply needs for smartphones and laptops.

Who do you think has more to lose from Micron's suspension of supplies to Huawei?

Huawei come on, tide over the difficulties, will be phoenix nirvana, rebirth!
