Japanese technology giant Fujitsu (Fujitsu) announced on the 13th that it has developed a 64-Kbit FRAM with the model number MB85RS64TU. This memory can operate at minus 55 degrees Celsius, Fujitsu Electronics' first FRAM non-volatile memory that can withstand such low temperatures, and is now available in mass production.

Fujitsu notes that FRAM is a memory that uses ferroelectric films as capacitors to store data, even when there is no power supply. FRAM combines the characteristics of ROM and RAM, with the advantages of high-speed write data, low power consumption and high-speed read/write cycles, and Fujitsu has been producing FRAM, also known as FeRAM, since 1999.

It is worth noting that FRAM products guarantee 10 trillion read/write cycles, which is about 10 million times more than competing non-volatile memory EEPROM. As a result, many industrial applications that require frequent overwriting of data, such as real-time data logging and 3D location data logging, use FRAM products.

Fujitsu further stated that the new FRAM supports a very wide range of supply voltages, from 1.8 to 3.6 volts, and even lower operating temperatures, as low as minus 55 degrees Celsius, exceeding the minimum operating temperatures of competing memories. Because it can guarantee 10 trillion read/write cycles over the operating temperature range, it is suitable for general industrial applications such as measuring equipment, flow meters, and robots on industrial machinery such as equipment or machinery for mining gas and oil in extremely cold areas.

FRAM products are available in the industry standard 8-Pin SOP package, enabling them to replace EEPROM in 8-Pin SOP packages. It is also available in an 8-Pin SON package with a minimum size of 2.00 x 3.00 x 0.75mm. The SON's surface mount area is only 30% of the SOP package, and the mount volume is only 13% of the SOP, making it more suitable for use in lightweight modern tool equipment.

Fujitsu said that in 2017, Fujitsu released FRAM products that can operate in an environment of 125 degrees Celsius, extending the high temperature limit of operating temperatures. This time, the re-developed products of minus 55 degrees further extend the low temperature limit of the operating temperature.
